Fertility

The typical acupuncture protocol for fertility is designed to optimize reproductive health and enhance the chances of conception. Here’s a general outline of how acupuncture is commonly integrated into fertility treatments:

Pre-Treatment Phase

Initial Consultation: Dr. Sara will conduct a thorough assessment of your health history, menstrual cycle, and any fertility issues. This helps in creating a personalized treatment plan.

Preparation: It is often recommended to start acupuncture 2-3 months before actively trying to conceive or starting assisted reproductive treatments like IVF. This period focuses on improving overall health, balancing hormones, and enhancing reproductive function.

Acupuncture Protocol During the Menstrual Cycle

1.Follicular Phase (Day 1-14)

Frequency: Weekly sessions are typically recommended during the follicular phase.

Focus: The aim is to support ovarian function, improve blood flow to the uterus, and balance hormone levels. Techniques may include points that support the kidneys, liver, and spleen, which are believed to influence reproductive health.

2.Ovulation Phase (Around Day 14)

Frequency: Sessions may be more frequent, such as twice a week, to align with the timing of ovulation.

Focus: Acupuncture during this phase targets improving egg quality and optimizing the release of eggs. Points may be used to enhance the flow of Qi (energy) and blood to the reproductive organs.

3.Luteal Phase (Day 15-28)

Frequency: Weekly or bi-weekly sessions continue.

Focus: The focus is on supporting the implantation of a fertilized egg and preparing the uterus for pregnancy. Techniques may involve points to stabilize the lining of the uterus and support progesterone production.

 Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ART) Protocol

1. Before IVF or IUI

Frequency: Begin weekly treatments 2-3 months before starting IVF or IUI.

Focus: The protocol aims to improve general fertility, regulate menstrual cycles, and enhance uterine lining and ovarian function.

2.During Stimulation Phase

Frequency: Regular sessions, often weekly or twice a week, depending on the individual’s response and the acupuncturist’s recommendations.

Focus: The goal is to support the body’s response to fertility medications, improve blood flow to the ovaries, and reduce stress.

3. Pre-Retrieval and Post-Retrieval

Frequency: Acupuncture is often scheduled a few days before and after egg retrieval.

Focus: Before retrieval, acupuncture helps mature the eggs. After retrieval, it aids in reducing discomfort, supporting uterine recovery, and preparing the body for embryo transfer.

4.Pre- and Post-Embryo Transfer

Frequency: Typically, acupuncture is scheduled on the day of the embryo transfer and again within 3-4 days afterward.

Focus: The primary focus is to enhance the likelihood of successful implantation and support early pregnancy. Continued sessions may be recommended to sustain pregnancy support until the end of the first trimester.

Ongoing Maintenance

Frequency: After initial treatment phases, continued acupuncture sessions may be scheduled based on individual needs and treatment progress.

Focus: Ongoing treatments help maintain reproductive health, manage stress, and support overall wellness.  Overall, acupuncture for fertility is a holistic approach aimed at addressing physical, emotional, and hormonal aspects to create the optimal environment for conception. Individual protocols may vary based on specific fertility issues and treatment goals.
